Protecting the ecosystems that sustain life in Rincón del Mar
Since 2023, Fundación Dos Aguas has been protecting and restoring 14 hectares of Tropical Dry Forest in La Cumbre of Rincón del Mar, one of the most threatened ecosystems in Colombia and in the world.
This forest is home to unique species and plays a vital role in maintaining the environmental balance of the territory, yet it remains extremely fragile.
The Challenge:
a vulnerable ecosystem
The Tropical Dry Forest has lost more than 90% of its original extent in Colombia. Deforestation, human pressure and climate change threaten both the species that inhabit it and the communities that depend on it.
Protecting and restoring this ecosystem is essential to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the long-term resilience of the territory.
Restoring, Protecting and Reconnecting
To compensate for our environmental footprint and contribute to the wellbeing of the territory, we carry out conservation and ecological restoration actions:
-
We protect 14 hectares of forest and actively support its natural regeneration.
-
We have planted 480 native trees, with an 80% survival rate, helping restore local vegetation.
-
We monitor wildlife with camera traps, which have recorded key and threatened species such as the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) and the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).
-
We have opened forest trails for silent walks and forest bathing, exploring forms of responsible tourism that allow people to connect with nature without harming it.
Results and Impact
The reserve already shows clear signs of recovery: more plants, more animals, more fungi… more life.
Every new record, every sprout and every footprint confirms that this ecosystem can still recover if it is protected.
